I fixed the link. You had copied the address of the page, not the photo. You need to right click on the + in the top right corner and copy that address.

Hi Si, well done for taking your first shots!

Why not do a bit of self assessment and tell us what you like / don't like about the image?

Its a great capture for one of your first shots with a new camera, very impressed with the quality of your kit as well .

I like the way you have made this zoo shot look so natural , a couple of points that I would look at if it was my image are :

Looking at the histogram the black slider needs to be pulled in a bit this will increase the contrast and give the image a bit more depth .

A little bit of sharpening would help especially around the eye .

A tighter crop off the right hand side and a wee bit off the top and bottom but not to much .

And finally the bit that you can't do anything about and that is the foliage in front of the bird , it's not really bad and the eye is clear which is the important part but still a bit distracting .

Very nice engaging shot ( great eye contact )

Mark

Very good for a first attempt. A little tweaking in the post edit (as Mark has suggested) and it will look even better. I personally think this shot would suit a square crop ie make the shot square instead of rectangular by chopping off some of the image from each side.

Thanks for the comments all.

I will have a go at cropping the image and making the adjustments you have suggested. I'll post the results up.

MattUK - I really like the image, but after reading a few of the comments I can see that it could be made even better with a few tweeks. The one thing I really like is the fact that as mentioned it does look like it was taken in the wild rather than a zoo.
