Question Which second hand DSLR

Hi I have been looking at second hand DSLR's as I want to upgrade from my compact Fuji Fine pix 60. I have set the ISO down to 100 now on my old banger but it still has a mind of it's own. Have looked at the Canon series, also the Canon SX40 which is a bridge camera. Out of the Canon and Nikon which is better for landscapes and night pictures? Looking for something which has sean modes and stabilisation with a decent zoom.

I have £300 or less to spend at the mo. Thanks.

Something like this would be a great start and it's new, slightly older model but you have a full warranty and it is a good starting point.

You should be able to pick up a Nikon D40 or, D80 in your price range. And/or a Canon equivalent! Keep in mind that the type and quality of lens will impact on your budget! Both brands, with the right lens are good for landscapes. Neither Nikon and Canon DSLRs Have ‘built – In’ image stabilization into there bodies! For this you would need Nikon VR or Canon IS Lenses, or third party equivalents. Olympus DSLRs do incorporate image stabilization into their camera bodies! My advise - shop around.

Canon equivalent would be either a 400D or 1000D.

Yep and I am a canon man as well

I think an IS lens will be a big ask though within budget so I think it would be better to get a half decent body with a kit lens and upgrade later when you know what focal length you want.

Nothing wrong with the kit lens on the Nikon, they do take some cracking pictures.

You'd think there were only two camera brands available! I'd have to give a shout for the Pentax K10d or K20d - I've had K10d for five years and it's just great..... the point being that many Pentax users are gradually upgrading to the K7 and K5 models and there should be plenty of K10s and K20s around.... like this one - with kit lens and battery grip for 300 squid.

If I hadn't of been bought the Nikon D90, I'd probably have gone with a Pentax. A new KR with 18-55mm kit lens is £390. Worth saving up those pennies and getting a brand new camera body and lens that is under manufacturers warranty. Any lens you fit to the Pentax has IS/VR as its located in the sensor. I sooooooo wish Nikon would go this route!
