when your stuck for ideas look around you
think of a theme Light, fear, havoc, movement etc.

then try to illustrate it

A theme is a good idea. If you're stuck for something try to choose a theme which doesn't tie you to a particular style of photo, something like light (as Ed suggested) or a particular colour.

Get your self a list of themes. Once you have a good selection pic one or two that could work together for example, light and reflection.

Now try and write a brief of what is needed using your theme or themes. This will give you structure to you work and limit the urge to take a pic at every opportunity. Set your self a brief a week and get to work.

Having a method of work should help with the college interview. You will be able to show how you came to take the photo and have a written brief as evidence. You will also be able to discuss how well you fulfilled you expectations. This is handy for self criticism, which should lead you to better pics.
