Hi

I agree with Cathus the Canon 24-105 L is the lens to take. I have been to New York a few times and the one thing I find with the larger lens, especially the L lenses is that because they are grey and stick out from the front of the camera, they get knocked about.
New York is full of people. You don't want to look too much like a tourist with a camera round your neck and a big lens sticking out the front.
You may find the 50 a bit short, but you don't say what photography you enjoy ? For candids it may be just the lens...
You may consider, as well, the weather, I went one year in May and it snowed, looked spectacular for a day or two. Then a longer lens for detail in the park may work well, as well as a macro.
You know what don't take any clothes just all the camera kit you can pack in !! You never know what you might need !! and New York is full of great shopping...

At least then it would get lighter as the day went on

Like that idea!

I want to make a time lapse movie while I am there soI will be taking my tripod or gorillapod, I have to be a bit careful about how much I pack as I am in Orlando for 10 nights before New York.

I can't imagine getting the 70-200 out in the middle of Times Square but maybe it would be needed in the park or getting a few shots of the statue of liberty.

I'd recommend the rockerfella for sunset. It has huge glass panels but you can fit a wide angle lens through the gaps in between them. There's a few in my 500px gallery...

Cheers Matt, I will do that. Really looking forward to the trip. Just have to make sure I take plenty of memory cards!
