70-200 L f4 in New York?

Hi All,

I am going to New York in May (Lucky me!)

I was wondering if anyone who has been would think there is a need for a telephoto? My walk about lens is a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 which I would have thought would cover most applications in New York.

Dave

Agree with Dan. New York is a big place with very tall buildings, so a 70-200mm would be ideal there for picking out details.

Only time I used my zoom in New York was in central park and on the ferry for the statue. Worth taking it if you can, but the vast majority of my shots were through my walkabout and wide angle

I just got back from Prague last night from a weekend visit. I took my 24-105 plus my 70-200 and a film camera.

The 70-200 and the film camera never even got taken out of the bag, to be honest it was a waste of time taking them and carrying them around all day. There was just so much to see that I didn't have time to be mucking about with changing cameras and lenses.

If I'd been there a week and had more time at each place I wanted to take photos it might have been different.

Mind you, I had the luxury of being able to go up to 105mm whereas you only have 50, so that might sway you to take it

Thanks for the comments, I think I might just take it. I can always leave it in the hotel room (safe!) if I dont need it. If I had the Canon 70-200 f2.8 I might think twice that thing weighs a ton!

Dave,

that's the one that was a dead weight in my bag for 48 hours.

I have the Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VR plus Nikon D3 around my neck all day when I'm out without problems. That's around 3kg but very seldom does it cause me a problem.

its' one thing carrying gear round and using it, quite another carrying it and not using it, I mean, I could have had a rucksack full of beer instead and been drinking it all day!
