ok, ups and downs -

Up - Mannananscloak with his Pump Prices - Firstly I want to say welcome to the comp and well done on your first entry. It's hard when you first start and your picture was up against some of the old stalwarts and it was a strong competition. Your photo was bang on theme, but not strong enough this week. Keep working hard at it and you will pull votes.

Down - Cutter with his Gutter Cutter - Excellent shot, simple, crisp, did what it said on the bin!!!! Well done.

Question on the ups and downs:

Is this commentary on the entries above and below mine?

Thanks.

Thanks Dave and Chris, i didn't know that.
Have a good weekend Chris and thanks for my vote Dave,
My UP

All The Eights by SamStones

Confused by it. Was it a ruler, or a row of tiles? The title was good.
It's difficult to get a white background without a lightbox so well done.

Up - love the effort that went in to catching the card in motion. (Liked it better in black and white, though, I think.) Good job, too, on getting the flying ten into the Rule of Thirds intersection.

Down - Maybe it's because I'm reading a book on composition right now - I looked at this photo and my first thought was of all the leading lines pointing from the top down to the buses. Also liked how the red of the buses pops off the greys surrounding them.

Above: TwinnieE - Unlucky for some.
This was my fave and got my vote. I loved the simplicity of it, the fading of the light, the gritty contrast/texture and the lone leaf. Quite an iconic picture I thought and had it on my desktop for a few days. Brilliant.

Below: kerbside - Crane No 30
Another great shot with perfect exposure on a difficult shot. I think the sheer scale of that crane was lost a little and I wonder if you could have composed it differently to capture that. Still a top shot though.

My Shot (thanks for your vote lesrhar):
Was harder to get than I planned since noone would give me permission to take a couple of shots in a games arcade - they thought I was casing the joint. Anyway, one guy took pity on me and I promised to show him what I'd taken and delete any he was woried about and he was ok cos they were all close-ups. I liked the reflection!

Other shots I particularly liked were: wavemachine, beancounter, DigiDiva and Cutter althought all the shots had merit.

I know what you mean I wanted to do a shot from a car breakesr yard but they wouldn't let me due to health and safety the ironic thing was a few weeks earlier they gave me a screwdriver and let me climb into a rover that was in the middle of a pile of wrecked cars so I could retrieve a bit of door trim I wanted to buy

Sorry I'm so late with my ups and downs but been so busy at home and had to go to work as well unfortunately

Ups - Arithmatic I love the shallow depth of field on this which obviously alters how this would look. I keep wnting to turn my head to the side so would perhaps have tried to place the numbers a little more towards being the right way up but just my opinion of course. A good and simple idea.

Downs - Unlucky For Some Good choice of topic I think and very simple. I like the leaf on the tarmac next to the number which adds to the shot.
