Salisbury cathedral

Evening all

Currently in the UK on holiday with my wife and daughter. Trying to take some moments to capture some new material for my portfolio.

Last Friday, I was handed a commission for a magazine. This is one of the images I came up with.

This is two images blended together with some curves to give it punch. Really, it's nearly all one image and I only needed a little bit of blending for the top window.

I got as close as I could to the water. Luckily, I had the place pretty much to myself

Hi Jools

Very nice shot but please tell me it was imposable to get dead center because that is the only thing that lets it down for me .

I did try Matt, believe me I tried! If I could have got that dead centre...

As it was, all the verticals were done in camera. The tripod was put at an odd angle to ensure the lens was looking straight across the font.

I lived in Salisbury all of my life until last November, so just over 35 years. It was only on Monday that I took my first pictures of it inside. Well, I say that. I've done the cloisters but that's not really the same.

When I saw the font, I couldn't believe my luck. To have the water that still and mirror like was amazing. An hour later, there were around 20 - 30 school kids crammed around it.

Interesting shot Jools - I take it that's a pool of water?

There's just a couple of things I'd suggest:

You could easily clone out the dude on the right, and there's also an odd diagonal line in the bottom right of the shot?

You flooded Salisbury Cathedral to get the shot??!!!

If you're going to use a flood filter I really think you need to get the 'reflection' right - like the tops of the chairs and the guy on the RHS - as well as the mirroring of the reflection which is out

What filter are you talking about?

The reflection is real and is from the new font in the cathedral. The guy on the right hand side is actually a statue that is part of a new exhibition.

If you google salisbury cathedral font then you can see similar images.

Oh! A million apologies! Just that it looked totally artificial - especially as the water goes right to the top edge!

Were they ok with you using a tripod in there? I've often thought about it, but the last time I was in there I got told off for having a hat on... local too btw (Romsey)

Markulous, don't worry too much about it. When I post something up though, just read the whys and therefores and you'll see where I might be coming from

How did I get away with a tripod? Because I telephoned in advanced and made arrangements with the press office. They asked if I would make a "donation" as the images were to be used for commercial purposes. I stuck a tenner in as the images will end up in a library somewhere and I could easily recoup that. In fact, the commission itself has already taken care of it

As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, if you try the same thing in Paris, you will definitely end up in trouble as I did a few times during my day there.
