Bad copy/lens calibration

Hi,

In the Canon forum i have talked about the problems I have had with a new 24-70mm L 2.8 lens.

My question is this, surely if you spend that amount of money you should get something that just works?

Also, is the calibration really important?

I'm asking as i need to get a new lens as i am shooting a wedding, just moved up from a pin sharp Canon 300D 18-55 kit lens and sigma 55-200 kit lens.

I have a second hand 5D.

I would take it back! How long have you had it? Are you saying its not as sharp as the 300d and 18-55?

I have sent it back and am awaiting a refund. It just wasn't sharp. Nowehere near as sharp as the kit lens and canon 300d.

More than likely a focusing problem rather than it being a soft lens. You should visit a store and try the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 There only £300-£350 and people love them. Dxomark rate it as sharper than the Canon and save yourself £1k

If it's a focusing problem it will be sharp somewhere, either in the foreground or the background. From the sound of it this isn't the case, so it probably is a 'soft' lens.

We have talked about this before on this forum. The subject of Colimation, which is the fine adjustment of all the elements in the lens to bring the image to a sharp focus. Just because it's one of Canon's top-of-the-range lenses doesn't exclude the odd rogue getting through, although it would speak volumes for their quality control.

I think Jaime's done the right thing sending it back from whence it came. although we don't know where he bought it and how long he has been waiting for his refund.

All companies seem to suffer from quality control. How do the test them before they go out? Are they tested by hand or are they connected to a computer or something? You can understand quality issues on the kit lenses which must be banged out on a massive scale, but top lenses you would hope would be build with a bit more care.

I will have a look at that thanks. Stupid question, wis that for Full Frame and why is it so much cheaper?

I bought it from Warehouse Express and have been waiting for a refund since Tuesday. They are refusing a refund at the moment despite it being tested on other bodies and other people looking at it!

UPDATE: Warehouse Express have agreed to the refund.

Well done on getting your refund Jaime. If nothing else it demonstrates that this was a duff lens, although I'm surprised WE didn't push a replacement on you.

Hey Fonz, You're right about quality control problems, particularly with kit-stuff, but with 'L' series lenses you're paying a heck of a premium and deserve hand-built and hand-checked quality.

Yeah thats what i was trying to say. The pro lenses you would hope were hand built my the master builders the old boys who have been working there 30yrs.

Jaime yes the Tamron is for full frame. Its not as well built as the Canon with no weather sealing etc. Tamron also suffer from quality control but you have just proved this is a problem for the big boys too. Tamron also give you 5 yr warranty. They have a lot of fans so you should try one out. You got lots of money left over for some more lenses. Wide angle for landscapes?

Under the Sale of Goods Act they have no choice but to replace it or refund the money. Glad they came through in the end. :
