I have now learned a new technique....cheers Jeff!!.....
The photographer who taught the 'Introduction to Photoshop' course I did in January, used a different method.
He just used two layers: a background and a background copy, desaturated the top layer, then used the rubber, to 'rub out' the black and white layer where he wanted colour. Quick and easy if you just want to do simple things. For more intricate projects, the layer method is better, because you can correct mistakes by using the white brush.

I have struggled with layers for months, as I simply could not get them to work, whatever I tried. I had used them twice in the past, so I knew it was possible, but somehow my software had become corrupted; I had to empty my 'preference folder' (which I did not know I had!), and now everything is working fine.

I have, yet again, started a new version of my 'two men on a crane.' Fingers crossed I can finally manage it this time!

Jeff, I might try the crop as a last resort, as I would like to keep the reflection of the two men, as it gives a bit more 'insight' in what they're up to. (Literally!)

Reinardina, the version I do is as you said. Open your image, duplicate the layer, desaturate the new layer then use the erase tool to reveal the image below.

It reminds me ofa thing I used to do as a child. I used to use a tool to scrape away a black layer of a picture and underneath was silver.I loved the effect.

As someone else said there is more than one way to do this. My preference is to duplicate the layer then use the selection tools to choose whatever it is you want to pop, I then refine the edge by 3 pixels to soften the join, invert the selection and then desaturate. I hope that makes sense.
Reinardina may find this method easier as you can zoom in and select exactly what you want, it may help with your vision problem.

Thanks Nigel. Haven't tried it that way. Have just started another attempt to do it with layers, if that does not work out, I'll try your method.

That's a good idea dan. I hadn't thought of that I'm self taught in PS and most of the time I don't really know what I'm doing. I think the monthly comp is a great idea. It's great to see everybody 'chipping' in with their favoured method of doing things.

Haven't seen (m)any comments on the forthcoming changes to the site on the comnpetition forums.

Hope everyone is aware that the personal galleries will be wiped, so if there are pticture there you haven't stored anywhere else, you'd better save them!

Don't know what will happen in the transition period; this may fall in the middle of the monthly comp.
