sigma lens

im looking to up grade my standard cameras lens a nikon 18-55 af s to go on a D5000
Ive come up against these 2 lenses from sigma
Sigma DC 18-50mm 1:2.8 EX Macro HSM
and
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM
i know one has stablisation but dont know what the other diffrence is as theres a price diffrence in the 2 with the 1st one being more expensive
has any one any expereance with either and what is the diffrence
also would i be better holding out for
Sigma 17 - 70mm f2.8 - 4.5 dc hsm

The EX refers to extra low dispersion glass, so it's better quality. It's also 2.8 through the zoom range, so it's a faster lens.

I'm sure they're both great. I have the 17-70mm by the way, and totally love it. Looks great, great quality, nice and fast and great optical stabilisation - and all at a very low price in my eyes. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Heres another vote for the 17-70os I have it on my canon 550d/T2i it really is a nice lens. It is a bit heavier though

I have the 18-50 f2.8. A great little lens, this was the lens I upgraded to from the kit lens.

Personally I think IS is overrated and much less required on a lens of this focal length, but if you prefer IS then get another lens. I don't think you'd be disappointed with the 18-50 2.8 though.

i'm not sure you need stabilisation at the length too. look at the tamron 17-50 also. its as sharp but cheaper.
