I am at a point that when I have 'digitally develop' some of my images I am not too sure if the image looks fake or over worked.

Due to my lack of photographic experience, when I took this image the sunset was nicely exposed but the foreground was completely black and no detail could be seen. After playing with it in Lightroom the image is exposed as I would have liked it but I am not too sure if it looks that right or if I have overdone it.

Any feedback would be great also a little advice on taking a sunset and not losing detail in the foreground or background would be fantastic!!

Hi Paul

Your image of the sun set is missing from your post mate , but to answer the other part of your question there are a couple of things that you can try . First if there isn't to much of a contrast between the sky and foreground then using a ND grad filter will even out the exposure between the two and you will keep the detail in both parts .Secondly if there is a large contrast you can take two shots , one exposed for the sky and the other exposed for the foreground and then combine the two in photoshop or your preferred software .

I understand what you mean when you say you can take two different images and merge them digitally which is how I have got around the issues previously, I was hoping to find an alternative method prior to processing the image. I guess this is where the filters come in. I will have a read up on them and maybe take the plunge and buy a few.

Odd effect... If I didn't know better, it looks like you've cut the grass and the needle, and pasted it into the sunset. I think you've done a good job working a single image, despite what I've said, it doesn't look overworked or fake I don't think!

Digital Camera mag gave a review of square filters in this months mag. They gave srb nd grad kit a good review. kit has 4 grads 1,2,3 and 4 stop for £46.
