Newbie After C&C

Hello Internet

New to the forum, but not overly to photography. Had my slr for 9 months now and I still feel I have lots to learn about it!

Here is a picture I took on a recent holiday to Snowdonia. I was a bit unsure on the composition so I though I would see what other people have to say on it.

For other images see my gallery. Im really careful what I upload, just dont think a lot of stuff is upload worthy.

Comments and Crits appreciated, Il don my flak jacket.

Hi James, just a little from me, I don't think you have made most of the composition, the bolder and the stream are too central, the focus or sharpness is not there, wether through camera shake or bad focusing, and the contrast seems poor I am sure you could bring more colour out of the greens and the browns.

hey you asked!!! Only my opinion and what do I know

Ha I did ask. It seemed to be a lot more ... green before I uploaded. well off to photoshop I go to saturate it

It was on a tripod.. but a cheap on and I was trying to cut out the rather large barbed wire fence on the left but your comment is much appreciated.

So moving the bolder off to you one side or as foreground element would be better composition??

Actually I'll disagree and say I don't mind the composition too much!

I think Cutter is right in that you can get more contrast out of it, although I really like the shade and feel of the image. Can you get any more definition out of the milky water though? Its just too white and ill-defined for me.

Iv boosted the contrast on my hard drive a bit. I think the white is a bit stuck to be honest I need an nd filter

Hope you don't mind but I had a quick play to pull out a bit more detail in the white water and a little boost of contrast .
Snowdonia is a location I would love to visit .

If you would prefer me to delete your image just met me know .

I have to agree about the composition. The shot screams "big boulder!" and not much else. Perhaps it could have been a bit more subtle by stepping back a bit and having the boulder in one of the corners?

Personally, I usually prefer streams on the diagonal as it tends to a stronger composition with the water flowing in/out the corner of the frame. Appreciate that you mention a barbed wire fence on LHS but maybe room on the RHS?

Contrast/Saturation-wise I don't really have a problem - but then I find an enormous number of images on the internet which have been overly boosted

Well, the white is "stuck" as you've burned that top corner (and some of the featureless areas of water). Again, I don't find that a particular problem - but careful composing of the shot to exclude sky would solve the issue (it's why most waterfallers shoot in overcast conditions). Please don't get an ND - see way too many being used unecessarily and where the composition is total rubbish. Concentrate on the basics first!
