Wildlife photographer caught using stock photos

From the story:

Award-winning wildlife photographer Terje Helleso has become one of this week’s least popular people in Sweden since it was discovered that he faked hundreds of photos over the course of several years.

Helleso, 47, who lives in the small town of Mullsjo in southern Sweden, was awarded Photographer of the Year by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in 2010, and has been involved in an ongoing project in documenting the lynx. In late August, a local official for a hunter’s association accused Helleso of doctoring photos, after being tipped off by Internet users.

Unfortunately, more people are now looking at his work since it was made public that he is a fraud.

As they say: you can fool some of the people some of the time; the rest is Photoshop!

Denise

Is there a way around it though? I'm sure that this has happened in the past and will continue to happen in future photography competitions. Will the RAW file of each image need to be submitted alongside each entry? Is this enough proof that the photo is original, or can this be tampered with too?

Don't think there is any way of altering a RAW file, and if all competitions required the RAW file then that would count a lot of peple who use compact cameras or take only in JPEG out. Don't think there is a solution to this issue.

I think over time you'll find a lot of photographers who are unethical. I don't mean as a whole. I found one photographer who setup their portfolio and was using several of my photos as his. So, it doesn't have to be one who has won the highest awards. It just shows that even high profile individuals can cheat.

His photography career may be in shreds but I'm sure he could earn a living from Photoshop workshops.
