the petal lenses are usually for lenses which, when at their widest focal setting would have vignetting if they had a round hood.

The lens is round so in normal circumstances a round hood would be OK, but the sensor is rectangular so on a wide angle setting you would get the edges of the image vignetted if the hood was solid at the edges. A petal hood opens up the edges so you don't get vignetting.

Generally, telephoto lenses have round hoods and wider angle lenses have petals

Another thing, a petal lens hood is not as useful on a lens that has the front element turn. If it turns when it focuses or zooms, then the "petals" will be in the wrong spots.

If you have Canon lenses, look for third party hoods. Canon's own are expensive. I recently purchased third party one (not screw in like the rubber ones) that mount just like the Canon's and are the same size as the Canons.
