Constructive Crittique Please...

Hi all,

I recently did my first ever 4 hour studio tutorial which comprised 90 minutes of theory, 2 hours of shoots and 30 minutes of debriefing and critique.

I had guests over for dinner last night and a mutual friend of ours apparently has implied that the shots I got weren't that great but the guest relaying the comments is not a photographer in any sense of the word and couldn't elaborate as to what needs improving upon.

Therefore I throw myself upon your mercy and invite any constructive comments that the more experienced among you (or not) may have to offer.

They look great to me Orbster. Technically they seem spot on. I have had no experience with studio and lighting work so probably not the best person to comment.

For a first effort they're excellent but one or two have little problems....
One (0138) appears to be out of focus - that might have been deliberate but a non-photographer might think it's accidental.
One or two could have been cropped a little tighter, getting rid of some empty wall space.
Eyes are not quite sharp enough in some - the lens appears focused elsewhere.

I think it's very rare that studio portaiture can get away with unsharp eyes or eyes without catchlights - that's what brings them alive.
Overall, though, I think they're very good.

Ok thanks for the input guys.

I can't remember whether I intended the monochrome one to be out of focus or not to be honest but it does give it a certain something I think
