I agree with amk1977. Have a go with the settings I advised yesterday, but I'm afraid it will still end up looking like it was taken under a street light! There's just not enough data to tease out any facial detail.
What camera are you using - Are you sure you don't have a RAW setting?

To be honest Andy, I think even a RAW file would have struggled a bit with this exposure, depending on the EV range of the camera taking it. With a Jpeg, you pretty much have to get it right in camera as the ability to recover over/underexposure is dramatically reduced. How long until you can get your mitts on a DSLR?

Quite right - plenty of people buying the latest gear and wanting to get rid of their old stuff - you should be able to pick up some pretty good stuff now.... 10 or 12 Mpx, couple of lenses maybe, with all the normal controls of a DSLR (exposure compensation, a few modes (Program Auto, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual), continuous shooting speed etc). Ignore fancy video capability or 'Scenic' settings. Simple is good. Something like a Canon 30D or 50D, Pentax K10d or K100d, Nikon D80 or D90..... a couple of hundred quid I'd think.

andy,

I think that's a poor price for a second hand 1000D even with an IS lens, I think IS on an 18-55mm lens is the least of your needs. The IS version lens is £99 brand new which should tell you something about the quality.

You can get a brand new canon 1000D from Currys for £329 with the standard 18-55mm lens.

BTW, I paid less than that second hand price for the 1000D when it was released brand new, from Argos 2 years ago.
