Canon Powershot A480

I bought a Canon Powershot 480 for my grandchildren to use when they visit my house and my grandson in particular is getting quite good. It recently flashed up a message to change the batteries. This has not been a problem in the year we have had it but this time, no matter how many times I change the batteries or take them out and replace them the message continues. I would be grateful for advice as to whether this is a problem that can be rectified please? Rhoda
