Hi Jimmy,

I like the shot. I think the close range/wide angle combination has given it a really interesting perspective that works well to emphasize the head.

It would have been nice to have had the background a little more blurred but obviously at 11mm focal length, its a lot more difficult to get a shallow DOF. I find the little dinosaur below a little distracting and there is quite a lot going on in the background. I'd be tempted to blur this out in photoshop (although I know you were looking for a natural DOF shot for the current IHC)

I know sometimes when someone sets the subject for the week end comp, it's easy to pick something that's what that person likes. I picked the DofF subject 'cos it's something I can't do very well. I learned today, as you said, that it's bliddy difficult to gain a decent DofF with my wide lens - I really didn't know that before I tried today, having never used the lens like that before. I guess then I've achieved the first part of what I set out to do with the comp - continue to grow as a photographer.

Yup, the wider the lens, the harder it is to blow out the background. Longer, the easier. I'm a big fan of using wide angle lenses for environmental portraits and close focusing. You get some really interesting and often, very pleasing results. I think you've achieved very pleasing results here and its great that you've learned something new, probably the best thing you walked away with from the shoot. That's what photography is all about. When you know it all, its time to hang up the camera strap. I hope I never stop learning!
