I love macro photography and I find hover flys are one of the more compliant insects to shoot but I have never got that much detail into the eye before , I use a Sigma 105 macro but your focal length was 60mm so did you use your 18 -105 kit lens for this shot ? .

Very nice shot, Darth, though can you capture one in flight and retain all the detail? Over the past week I've seen a plethora of shots of Hover Flies on the wing and they look amazing. Trouble is they're shot at ISO 1600 at 1/2000th of a second with a full frame camera.

This was taken using a Nikon 60mm Micro lens. Tried to get one in flight but the 1:1 focal distance of this lens is like 3"....
Mark, i'd never get that level of detail with the 18-105 kit lens.....i've tried lol

To catch a hoverfly in flight look for a dark area with a shaft of sunlight, as they tend hover in the beam of light.
