Suggested locations in and around York

Hi everyone,

I met up with one of my cousins yesterday at a family get together who has just decided to take up photography as a hobby and joined her local camera club. She spent nearly an hour quizzing me for advice and tips on how she can improve her skills.

The upshot is, that I've been invited to join her for a day one weekend, shooting in and around York. Now, it's sometime since I've visited either York or the surrounding area and I wondered whether anyone had any suggestions of where the best places to go were in and around this magnificent city.

I'm guessing York itself will be pretty busy with both tourists and locals most weekends, so will this make photographing some of the main sites, like the Minster and the Shambles diificult, unless we purposely do a bit of street photography?

Any advice would be welcomed!

Okay, I'm going to extend this to places within the Yorkshire Wolds and places along the East Yorkshire coast as a back up plan.

Theres 'The Shambles'. I imagine it to be fantastic when the crowds have gone. B&W, unusual angle. Or you could get some shots of people stuffing Betty's Fat Rascals..........Theres an amazing place called High Cup Nick. Its a proper hike from a village called Dufton, not sure where in Yorkshire it is off the top of my head, but its the best example of a glaciated valley in europe apparantly. This is it.....

Hope this helps..Enjoy.

That's a river valley 'cos it's "V" shaped. I thought glacial valleys were "U" shaped?

[Disclaimer: it has been a long time since my Geography A level]

Unless the TV got it wrong....saw some programme about it where they flew over places 'up north' in a helicopter.. they went over there and I fell in love with it. Google or wiki it!

Thanks Chris, I'll look into it. What do think of Castle Howard as a possible location for photographing? I think there would be plenty of scope, wouldn't there?
