Flash in AV or TV mode on a Canon 450D

Hi all,

I wonder if I am doing something stupid but can someone briefly explain to me how to get the built-in flash work in AV or TV mode. When I enter TV or AV mode I then pop up the built-in flash but it seems to me that the metering isn't affected by the fact that the flash is going to be used. For example, I tried to take a picture inside today with the flash on and the metering indicated a shutter speed of greater than 1 second.

Any tips as how to take successful pictures using AV or TV mode and the flash
I'm sure that I am missing something obvious but I don't know what!!

Yours
Kevin

saying which camera you're using would be a bit of a help!

You can set the shutter speed in the menu to 1/250th which is the max sync speed for most DSLRs' and that way you set the aperture and the camera will work out the flash power for you.

Hi Kevin, I'm a novice at this but you might find some useful info if you look at the following link. http://web.canon.jp/imaging/enjoydslr/part2/2Ac.html

If you shoot in Tv or Av modes, the camera assumes you are using fill flash. That is why the metering seems wrong - it is metering for the background and when you use the flash it, the flash will be metered separately.

If you want the flash to be the main source of light, then the easiest way is to use P or green square.

Unless I have enough light to get shutter and aperature values that are reasonable (Rallying springs to mind!) then I will often use manual. I just dial in what I want and let the flash work its self out - sometimes adding 1 or 2 stops of FEC, depending on what I'm trying to achieve.

I think there is a article on photonotes website, but I can't remember!!
