Can't agree with you on that Keith. £650.00 for a seldom used rear window to go up and down is an exhorbitant amount of money for a mass market car. Dropping the gearbox out of a front wheel drive car is not a straightforward job, and the cost of a precision engineered replacement gearbox can hardly be compared to an electric window winder mechanism. You probably had a new clutch at the same time and maybe a cv joint or two.
I wouldn't want to skimp on brakes, £350.00 for pads all round and two new rear discs, which probably needed inner and outer wheel bearings and seals too, may seem a little excessive, but I bet your local garage wouldn't have been dramatically cheaper.
