Flashgun Doh!

Do you ever have one of those Doh! moments?

I took out my Sigma macro flashgun yesterday for the first time in over a year to shoot some bumble bees in the flowers.

This strobe has 2 flash tubes, one either side & i realised that only one of them was firing.
Today I decided to see how easy it would be to take it apart to see if the flash tube had become unseated or was obviously blown. I got out the miniature screwdrivers & managed to remove the back but couldn't get to the flashtubes as I couldn't get to the front.

So I decided to check the manual to see if there was instructions to change the flash tube, there weren't.

So I decided to Google 'changing the flash tube / spare parts and was going to give Sigma a call when I remembered that you can actually turn off either of the flash tubes for creative effect.

I turned the flashgun on, changed a setting & both fired perfectly. I then spent 10 minutes fitting all the screws back.

Doh!

I think my biggest doh moment was when (last year when I was even less experienced than now) I visited Durham to take some night shots. I was having terrible problems focusing as the auto focus kept searching and in manual mode I couldn't see much. All my photos were rubbish. I couldn't understand why it had been to difficult to see through the viewfinder. It wasn't till I went to clean my lens that I realised my ND filter was on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a shiny new Manfrotto monopod for my birthday. Despite taking it out on several occasions, I've yet to use it. Each time I try to, i realise I've left the head on my tripod in the boot of my car

Aren't I lucky to use a bridge? So many things I can't forget! Even the lens cap pops moff automatically when I switch it on.

I'm probably not the only one who's thought 'I need a faster lens', stuck on the f1.8, and left the camera set on aperture priority, f/8?

My top two, in ascending order - forgetting to turn off the self-timer (got a great shot of empty sky instead of the helicopter flying past); and forgetting to put the CF card back into the camera after downloading photos (not ideal if you take a series of shots that can't be recreated).
