Hi Dan, hard call mate.

If you are going to use a longer reach leans quite often, buy the multiplier. If not, hire the 400mm.

I am lucky and have both. The extender on a 70-200 is not quite as sharp as the 400 wide open? Even the 100-400 is sharper than the 70-200 2x combo.
I have the older and newer 2x and they are great with primes but not so hot with zooms!
I would/have used them in a pinch though.
Post some images.

I'm a bit concerned that you don't have a monopod. Do you have a tripod?
To try to hand-hold a 400mm you're going to need a shutter speed greater than 1/750 unless you've got VR when you might safely bring that down by 2 stops.
Good luck

Not sure where you are Dan, but if you're anywhere near me you're welcome to borrow my monopod
