I actually hadn't thought about it, but will definitely try it if I'm out and about without my tripod. I think it's a good idea. Thanks

There's a local photographer here (in Canada) who does a lot of travel shots and is regularly published - he's very good. He uses a tripod for landscapes etc - but takes most of his 'street' shots hand-held, with a deliberately slow shutter speed. His pictures have a dreamy glow about them..... any subject movement shows as a blur of action, reflecting the hustle-bustle of city life, while any camera shake gives everything a soft feel.

Yes, I know it's not quite 'on-topic', but it's worth noting that we can sometimes wander away from the technical 'rules', like always using our fastest shutter speed.

Just to add to other posts - if you're concerned about jogging the camera when you press the shutter button try a little trick I was taught about 100 years ago. Instead of stabbing down on the button, roll your finger over it. It makes a lot of difference, especially on the long exposure hand-helds that we are all tempted to try from time to time.
