I've deleted the spam, but will keep an eye on it. I don't want to reinstate captcha if I can help it...

Marcus, can't you implement captcha for post based groups?

Captcha for the first five comments, then it goes away. I'm sure people could live with that. That way you can leave it turned on permanently.

There's enough trustworthy regular members on here - why not give them mod rights on comments?

Matt, the mods don't even get mod rights on comments. To be honest the thought of 143,501 members with mod rights does scare me a bit. Especially if someone upsets one of them.

I'm not suggesting the entire user group gets it

Just a select few regular people (Karen springs to mind, for example).

And the mods not having that ability is rather silly, and surely easily fixed?

I agree with that for some of the regular users of certain parts of the site. it would be handy.

Silly is the understatement of the year. , We've been saying this for ages. We only have mod permissions in the forum, and not anywhere else on the site, (this includes the gallery).

These sort of options are available to Marcus, and if they're not they should be. Then the staff need to learn how to use the site, the ACP and its functions instead of paying someone to switch basic stuff on and off.

Do you really need mod permissions on the entire site? It's rare that comments on articles need moderation.

I post sometimes on a local newspaper's site and their report button hides the offending post from view until it can be viewed by someone from the paper. The only problem is, there is a lot of bickering on there and you find some of the guys report each other's posts just so they can remove it. I am not saying it would happen here but someone feeling a bit mischievous could just go on a deleting spree! Maybe if the spam is coming from certain IP addresses the IP range could be banned from posting. I suppose though if they use proxy or anonymous servers that wouldn't work.

This is about dealing with spam comments in articles - the very thing that you enabled CAPTCHA for in the past, not general comments.
