Best lens for 7d

Recently upgraded from 400d to 7d and loving the new body. i am now thinking about upgrading lenses to get the best from my new toy. I currently have a sigma 17-70 non os and 70-300apo. I also have the canon 18-200is i bought for going to Italy with the 400d last year. I would still like to have something a bit general purpose but better IQ than I have.
Having read numerous foriums and reviews i am now more confused than ever. Lenses I have looked at are.

24-105L apparently great lens but not very wide on the 7d and expensive.
15-85is usm got the reach and plenty wide enough for my needs. Not so worried about the low light performance as have 430 flash. but how good is it compared to what i have.

also looked at the newer 17-70 0s sigma and giving the old one to the wife with the 400d she is now using with the old kit lens, and maybe the Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 SP Di VC USD.

I know now that the suprzoom avenue was the wrong one to go down.

Hi, a friend of mine just recently upgraded his 450 to the 7D (I really don't like him now cause I've been talking about getting this camera for almost 2 years and kept on harping on about how great this camera was, typical..... I talked about it that much, he went out and bought it..... I'm sooooooo jealous!!!!!!!!!!!), anyway, sorry about that, he also got the 24-105 (he's a git... lol) and thinks that it is a wonderful lens and very rarely takes it off. Don't know about the Tamron 70-300, but I've read reviews about the 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 DI 11 VC PZD and as far as I know the only down side was that it was slightly soft at the telephoto end.

Hope this helps..... Oh!!!! sorry again about the rant..........

I have a 7D and bought it with the 15-85mm this is my most used lens and I love it, at the wide end you can get barrel distortion and vignetting which can be improved by stepping down a tad but that is to be expected from a lens going down to that wideness, I think you will see an improvement over the sigma lens and certainly the IS will assist when the light drops off. Longer term I am looking to get the 24-70 L and the 70-200 F2.8IS but that is a long way off.

The 24-105 is a good bet but it is a lot of money and you do loose out at the wind end especially when you take the 7D 1.6 crop factor into consideration.

If you want to get a bit techy then have a look at these:-

sigma

Canon

Think I've just about settled on the 15-85 and after checking out a lot of reviews and pics on flickr the Tamron is looking like a good option too

The ideal non L lens for the 7D the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM Lens. Cannot praise this lens highly enough, the only downside is the cost approx £780
