PEF or DNG?

One of the many favourable features of Pentax DSLRs is the abilty to shoot RAW in Pentax's own PEF format or Adobe DNG. My few test shots with the new K-5 suggest there is little noticeable difference in IQ between the two RAW formats and this is also hinted at in various reviews.

My inclination is to shoot DNG as a possible way of 'future-proofing' images but having only just moved to Pentax after many years of Nikon I would be interested in what more experienced Pentax users have to say about PEF v DNG shooting. Thanks.

Well, I've tried using both and tend to stick to the native PEF format. The files are smaller and you can always convert any you are worried about keeping into DNGs later. Don't forget that Adobe keep changing the DNG format whenever they feel like it.

I remember seeing a comment about file formats somewhere where the reply was to the effect that there will always be a 14 year old somewhere who'd be able to read the files no matter what.

I've been using my K5 a bit more of late and the quality of the output is really excellent. I'm a happy bunny. Just over 400 shots since it arrived and I still haven't had to recharge the battery.

But a battery grip is on it's way just in case, and so that I can have somewhere to put my little finger if I feel like it

As for 14 year olds, I know they are right little clever-dicks these days but what a life being stuck in front of a screen for endless hours. When I was that age all I was interested in was girls and guitars and just wanted to be out of the house all the time having fun Times change eh?

Really glad you are enjoying your K-5 and getting lots of use. Mine's a little neglected at present due to a lot of other commitments so you are about 370 shots ahead of me.

Adobe DNG is a universal file format and I have used it with all of my Pentax digital cameras.
Adobe Labs are the market leaders in this area of expertise and I have never had any problems in all the years of using them.
