Post which lens next to upgrade for 500D?

i am currently new to photography and have invested in a Canon EOS 500D with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

What Lens would you recommend i invest in next? i want to take a whole range of pics, so not sure if i want a particular zoom lens or wide angle.

Any recommendations or advice would be grateful

It all Depends on your budjet really, Id go for a zoom lens, this will give you more scope, Canon do the EF-S zooms these are reasonalby cheep up to around 500 quid, or the L series wich start around 1000 quid, i think a zoom up to 200 mm will sufice,

Budget is the key really and I am assuming under £500 another consideration is are you happy to change lenses when out and about.

If you go down the zoom route and are happy to change lenses then under £500 there are two main options the 70-200 F4L or if you need more reach at the high end then the Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 SP Di VC is a lovely lens. If you want more reach then the lenses will go up in price and weight. I would steer clear from the Canon 70-300 EF IS though unless of course you budget stretches to the new L version

If you don't want to change lenses then you may want to consider a super zoom two lenses spring to mind here the Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di LL VC and the Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC HSM the Tamron has slightly more reach but I believe the Sigma is marginly better optically. Remember with super zooms are a compromise so image quality will not be quite as good as the 70-300 or 70-200 also you will tend to suffer more chromatic abertions and barrel distortion but these can be corrected in PP anyway.

I suggest the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens at just under £1,300. This will allow you to cover most ranges from wildlife to people shots. It would make a great walkabout lens.

Sure, if you don't mind walking about with a 20cm long lens on your camera!

If you are going the zoom direction the ef-s 55-250mm is a great little lens and a great price, about 150 pounds. The mark II is being released this month I believe which should drop the mark I price even further.
