About 3pm you say, I wonder if you'd took this shot a little bit later in the day whether it would have softened the contrast between the two opposing banks just enough, as the quality of light would have been that much better. Otherwise, you'd have needed to bracketed and then blended your shots together to even things up, because as you have already pointed out it looks as though the scene itself was outside the dynamic range of a camera. Great attempt nonetheless!

I think a blue sky is just fine. Might have been better to tilt the camera down so reducing the area of sky otherwise, it's a cracking shot. As you took the shot at 15:00 it might have produced a different outcome at midday.

Not from a boat - there was a gravelled fishing bank which served as the perfect platform.

Not 100% sure what font it is as I'm not in front of my PC, but I think its Garamond?

It's a good call - I'll give it another go at a different time and see how it looks
