My 'portfolio' on Flickr

Hi all, I wonder if anyone might have a moment to take a look at some of my work on http://www.flickr.com/photos/r0bm867 and let me know what they think in general..In advance I will say I realise I have a lot to learn!

Also there is http://www.raw-photography.net The content there is quite old and does not represent my best work by any means, but the content is due for an overhaul this month!

Thanks all!

That could be why very little else has been said I suppose.

Hi Rob,
Why not pick a couple of what you feel are your best examples and publish them here. Alf has a point, if not somewhat of a blunt approach! You will get a better response if you make the effort rather than relying on others to sift through your portfolios.

Rbarry, level200 and MattUK thanks for the advice and I take your point. As a newbie I'm happy to accept that is how the forum works. I did feel a link to my flickr was easier and gave people the chance to look at the ones they wanted...I didn't really feel that a simple few clicks counted as 'legwork' I'm afraid Alf. Seems a pretty simple action to me...

... I'm a little disappointed at alfbranch's attitude to be honest. It would have been more prudent to just not have responded at all rather than put a pointless statement such as yours. Photography can be an intimidating learning curve for some and I imagine poor responses such as yours put off some of those who would otherwise benefit from this kind of forum. Shame on you

I feel no shame I am on several forums for various interests and its the same there. You will have noticed you have yet to get a comment on your work. Its hard enough getting comments with pictures posted in a thread.

Rob,

I suppose the point is that there have been many instances of new members asking for critique on linked sites where hundreds of uncatogorised images have been uploaded without any attempt to discern good from bad image examples.

By all means include links to your sites, but also post some of what you consider to be the better examples of your work to arouse interest. I notice there are 21 pages to get through on your Flikr account and four categories of images on your own website. Incidently, I like the image you posted re your photography diploma and I will add to Pburness's comments later.

There are a lot of different genres of technique that you use as seen within your own website that could do with isolating for critique, for example, slow shutter speed long exposures, tilt and shift, monochrome, macro, and heavily processed post effects work.

You can tell I have taken the trouble to look through your sites, so let me take one image as an example to get the ball rolling for you. I have had to copy your image and host it in order for me to publish it here so others can make up their own mind. Remember this is just my opinion and not to be taken de facto.

This is a nice long exposure, but the obvious flaw is the person standing right in front of you in the foreground. It is a major distraction and to a lesser extent the two cables between the person and the fare ride aren't helping either as it looks like it's being used as a washing line. The lantern centre right behind the attraction spoils the movement in the subject material. Perhaps if the shot had been taken further to the right and slightly higher to take out the cables it would have worked better. That said, if the shot was hand held you've done a good job, and the mixture of colour given off by the ride looks great.

Hope this is of some use to you,
All the best,
Rick.
