Elements 9 Reading PEF file

Installed Elements 9 Premiere today, and suddenly Elements 9 cannot open a PEF file, displaying the error message that it is an incorrect file format. Yet the same file was opened before installing Premiere, and I also have CS5, which opens it with no problem at all.

Any idea what the problem could be?

It looks like it installed an old version of the Camera Raw.8bi file hence, why you can't open your PEF raw images. Just go onto Adobe's website and download the lastest version and you shouldn't have a problem. Make sure you follow the instructions, as you need to remove the old file from your PC before installing the lastest version.

Glad it worked OK.

I never understood why they didn't do that before, as you had to remove the old file before you installed the new version. If you didn't then it didn't overwrite the old version which is strange, as when you copy a file with the same name then it overwrites the older version in nearly all cases except the Camera Raw?

Good point, OldBoy..... but on the other hand, if you downloaded a later version of CameraRaw and it turned out it didn't work in your version of CS or Elements, you'd be snookered - because you might not be able to find another download site for the superceded version (there's always been a bit of a puzzle about different versions that may or not work on certain versions of CS and Elements).

Not sure that's true Geoff, as the updater should be programmed to send the old file to the recycle bin, from which it can be restored. If fact in the older version of Dos, it use to keep old file in a storage area from which it could be recovered. Why Microsoft removed this is beyond me, as I found it very useful when writting new code in DataEase and if it caused problems I could restore the database files.

Yes, OK - I was really talking about before the Update became automatic..... when Adobe's instructions were to take the old CameraRaw.8bi file out of the folder before putting the new one in. (I can't remember if they said 'Put it aside' or just 'Remove it')

They told you to put it in a safe place or on your desktop.
