Portfolio/image library website

If you go pro you gotta have a website so that customers or anyone interested can find your work, see what you do and of course contact you (or even make sales through the website).
My question is if you want to sell your images to various publishers would you put your entire image library on your site for them to browse through? Or just a "best selection" of images to reflect what you do? And then send specific images to specific publishers which may or may not already appear on the website? It's something that I am undecided as what best to do.
From what I've seen individual photographers seem to just have a portfolio website, a selection of images that reflect what they do. And then image libraries obviously have the full collection with download facility. Would an individual photographer benefit from download facility or would it be better to deal with clients directly? This is in the case that work is submitted speculatively and not on comission.
Obviously the big difference is working as an individual photographer (or a brand) as apposed to joining image libraries as there styles differ and your images disappear into the sea of all the others.
Plus image libraries generally have standard prices for the cost of images depending on resolution or maybe terms of use. If operating as an individual photographer how do you set prices or is each one negociated with the client or does the client offer a general fee they pay ie in the case of magazine publishers?
Answers to a few of these questions would be very useful!! Thanks
