Test Strips

I use Photoshop CS2 and have been very pleased with the results. However to try and save printing paper and frustrations could anybody point me in the right direction to obtain test strips or slices of any particular photo, in order I can try and get the colour balance right first time (as per the old darkroom methods). In addition if a process is available does it also work for Black & White?

There is a greyscale wedge & instructions for improving your B&W prints, but I believe a colour profile will need to be generated for your printer / paper combination to get the best.
