Filter shopping basket

Hi guys, once again I'm looking to the expertise on here for some sense checking.

I've done a fair bit of research (including searching previous threads on this forum, but want to sense check some things.

My objective is primarily the following:

  • Shoot ultra wide angle landscapes (10mm) on my Sigma 10-20 (82mm thread)
  • Use a Circular polariser
  • Use a high ND filter for long exposures

I don't necessarily need to combine both filters, but it would be nice.

I gather that the Kood filters are really good value, but I also gather that I need 100mm filters in order to avoid vignetting (or rather showing the filter holder) at 10mm. Therefore I was looking at the Cokin z-Pro series (as I assume they're less money than the X-Pro series?)

I don't need any grads or colours (as I do this in PP).

Therefore I'm guessing I need:

Alternatively, is it not worth the effort / cost, and should I just stick to circular screw filters?

Thanks for any advice!

If you are just looking for a CP and an ND for the camera have a look at THIS FOR THE CP, the slim ones are the best for the wide angle lenses.

The ND is a bit of a problem as the largest screw in that I could see is a 77mm so you may have to look at a square filter system there. I have the 85mm (Cokin P) size 10 stop from HiTech and whilst sometimes it gives me a magenta cast, this is easily corrected in ACR. I also have the Lee Big Stopper and that was well worth the wait even though this gives a slightly blue cast again it is easily corrected.

Hi matt.

i think Kood do a 100 mm system, ive seen it adveritsed somewhere
you can get cheeper polarisers.. a Hoya Pro wont set you back that much, these will screw on the lens and then mount the other filter holders onto this..

The main issue 10 stop hi techs have is light leakage, they have released a new one recently that could combat this.

or B+W do a screw on 10 stop, ive heard there preety good, http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_...=b%2Bw+10+stop, dont now if they do one to fit your lens though.
or you could get a lee system but you could be in for a long wait..

Thanks Steve, but your URL doesn't seem to work?

I don't think the 85mm will work on my 82mm lens at 10mm - I've heard it causes heavy vignetting. That's why i was looking at the 100M z-pro series

Thanks Dan, it seems that B+W don't do an 82mm unfortunately

Sorry Matt, the link was supposed to be to the B&W CP on WEX

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-...ilter/p1013450

I should have explained my comments better in my first post too. The 85mm system definitely won't work with your lens as it doesn't with mine, the reason I got the Big Stopper but HiTech/Formatt also do all of the square filters in the 100 mm system too. My CP is also from Formatt, I have the 105mm which screws on to an attachment on the front of the filter holder. It is rated deep though and I am looking for another filter holder as I do get vignetting at the lower end but I have 2 filter slots plus the ring and think that the optimum would be 1 slot and the ring. I see that format do sell the hardware too and that they do sell a specific holder for 1slot and a ring.

Crikey, that's £200 :\

So are filter holders much of a muchness? The one I linked was £45, but there's loads of cheaper ones on ebay. I know that for most equipment, you get what you pay for - but is the more expensive holder worth it?

Thanks again for all the help

If the Z-Pro holders are anything like the P Series the will be made of plastic and will slide on to various size adaptors. I went for the Lee Foundation kit which is metal and the Wide Angle adaptor but this is likely to set you back the thick end of £100. To adapt this to my other lenses, I have various step up rings to meet the 77mm adaptor.

Thanks Alf - they do seem good prices. Amazing how difficult sites make it to understand and buy filters...
