Dear All

Interesting discussion! I've been using an old Tamron 28 - 300mm but took some comparison shots recently and was very disappointed with the results. As a result I've been wondering what to replace it with as a 'holiday lens'.

My initial thoughts are to get the Canon 55 - 250mm IS whilst I save for some 'better glass' - what do you think?

Camera is EOS 500D

Ian.

The 55-250mm is great value for money, it punches above it's weight for optics although the build quality as you would expect for the money is not as robust as some of the other lenses.

The only thing I will say is you have no cover at the wide end so you will probably also need to carry a standard zoom for those situations. There are people that own that lens and have got better glass and refuse to let it go which says it all really

Thanks Dave

I should have added that I have the kit 18 -55mm IS lens and the Tamron 10 - 24mm. It was really to do with having a 'holiday lens' that I could leave on most of the time that covered most scenarios.

Hi, this is new to me, being from the Fred Flinstone brigade. I to have Canon 7D, the lens I use most is the 24-105 f/4 L, also used it on my 40D, I find it covers many areas, reasonably fast, extremley sharp, quick to focus, the IS is absolutley brilliant and not to heavy. All in all this is a lens that I would never sell. got mine from Park Cameras as a 5D split in white box, saved around £160,00 same lens with hood & cloth bag also Canon UK & you can't take pictures with a card board box. Both great lenses but if you can get a white box one from a reputable UK dealer go for the 24-105,
Hope this helps
