I've used laptops with/without external hard drives, photobanks (Vosonic and Epson) but now use a Belkin USB 'master' device that allows me to connect my camera to an external hard drive

Markulous, can you elaborate on what you're now using? Is it something like this:

Well, that seems like a very cheap way to solve my dilemma!

What is the transfer time like with it? If I'm shooting in raw will it be a snails pace? Does it eat the batteries?

OMG, so many new questions, so little time!!

LOL!

I only use the power supply - don't want it to run out of power midway through a D/L and I'm always somewhere where I've power (and anyway an invertor in the car). It's slow but not concerned by that - I've the 7D

Sounds perfect then!!

Now, an invertor in the car you say?!

What other fab little device can you tell me about?! If you tell me you have something that you can charge your camera batteries with while using you cigarette lighter....well, I might just pass out!!

Well, that's what I use it for - plug 240v camera battery charger into invertor and charge - great for all those items that don't have a 12v adaptor

I did a test last week with a car battery jump start kit & an inverter. I managed to plug my studio lights into the inverter which was plugged into the battery pack & get 50 flashes out of my studio lights before the battery pack started to lose charge. That was without it being fully charged.

Does anyone know a reason why you shouldn't do this (not knowing about electrics and all) The light was 150W & the inverter is 300w.

I normally use the battery pack & inverter to charge my laptop & camera batteries when I go to a 2 or 3 day airshow & camp.
