How do I resize an image

Somewhere, in a world where it was easier to make posts and find earlier answers, I read a thread which gave answers on how to resize an image so that you can get a bigger print than you would normally expect from an image.
More specifically, I have a jpeg of 3216x2144 pixels and I have been asked to get someone a print made in the region of 16" x 12" ( ok I know the image is a 3:2 and I need 4:3 , but I'll crop accordingly ).
The site I'm going to use require 300pixels per inch so I would normally expect the longer side to be around 11" max but for this other method.
Someone described the process for getting a bigger print without pixellation. Can anyone help plse?

Hi Dagwood

One of the best and easiest and also one of the quickest photo graphic viewers i have ever used that resize and will also let you edit and do multiple tasks.
it will let you resize either by pixels or actual size is acdsee downloadable from the net free trail with the option to buy later.
for any one who stores lots of photo's once you double click on the photo to make it full screen it will flick and change the photo's as quick as you turn the wheel on the mouse

Gordon, thanks for that link. I have used ACDSee before when I had a Pentax but had not resized with it. I'll have a look at the link although I may stay on the Elements path for the moment.

i really don't know how to resize but i do plenty using lightroom i just input the pixel count and away it go's [simples] i know that is of no help to you sorry i though i would just add my 2p worth

If you have Photoshop you can upscale the image to some extent using the File > Image Size > Bicubic Smoother option. For greater size increases you can try the Genuine Fractals plugin from onOne software which gets good reviews.
