For the update. We have a Conservative majority government. The official opposition, for the first time ever, are the New Democratic Party (left of centre). The Liberals (who have formed more governments than any other party) were left with just 34 seats. The best news of the night, the separatist Bloc Québécois only won 4 seats.

New is 1 member elected for the Green Party of Canada.

There are 308 members in the Canadian House of Commons.

Hard to tell.... certainly Canada, having had a Conservative government for several years, has come through this recession with less damage than many countries but there's a faint whiff of something sinister about them... tax breaks for big corporations, huge contract for American fighter jets (billions), more or less closing parliament down when things are going against them (called 'prorogation' - no, I'd never heard of it either).

My city, Kingston, elected the only Liberal candidate for a few hundred miles around, so now there is talk that the Conservatives Federal Government will be stingy with financial support etc as we're now the 'black sheep'.

Yes, all the whining the banks did asking for deregulation and it was that very regulation that saved their asses in the long run.

I would not say sinister, I would call him a bigger control freak than Batman. He likes to control the message.

Kingston gets lots of federal money now, several prisons, military base, Royal Military College. However, do not expect anything extra, I would agree.

Toronto may actually get something back now, rather than giving, since we elected several Conservatives.
