Yes there is.

Use the Adobe DNG converter to download all the files from your memory card as a batch and convert them to DNG on the fly.

I do this as a matter of course with my D90 files, and I save everything as a DNG rather than a NEF. I reckon that there will always be something that will open a DNG (which is an open format as far as I am aware) whereas in a few years time trying to find something to handle a Nikon D90 NEF file might be a bit of a problem.

And one other factor is that the DNG file is slightly smaller than the NEF, saves on storage space
