Dslr choice?

Hi, i have a Lumix DMC-FS5 and a Kodak Z650, and although they both take a good photo they are'nt in the same league as a SLR.
My intention is to upgrade to the SLR's but because of cost limitation on my part i am restricted to what i can get!
i have been looking at Panasonic's Lumix DMC- G1 and Canon's EOS 1000D! can anyone give me some good advice on which way i should go on either of these or something you think is better for around the same price.
Hope you can help me out here as i really am not sure on picking an SLR camera.
Thanks
Phil

There are so many pros and cons that it is impossible to advise. But wait for the replies to come in, you will be more confused.

Of the 2, I would buy the Canon as there is a much greater range of lenses and other accessories that you can get for the Canon range.

If you want more advice (as Nikonian) we're going to need more info. What do you want to shoot, how much have you got to spend, do you have access to old lenses or other equipment, do you have any particular needs, is there any brand you particularly like (or don't like) etc. etc.

You might also consider buying second hand as cameras such as the 40D may come into your budget and they are more robustly made and have more features
