Hoya HD filters

If any of you are contemplating puting a new filter over your lens for protection, or for completing the weather sealing with Canon L series lenses, consider this one before you throw your money away. Take a look at this demonstration on Youtube. It's frightening, yet heartwarming at the same time. The sound isn't brilliant, but watch the action.

Impressive. Funny how Aussies say "Haitch".... I heard another Aussie on CNN doing the same, and an Aussie TV show as well, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and apparently it's a standard Aussie thing (and Irish, too).... due to being taught that way by Catholic teachers, while Protestant teachers use 'Aitch'. Weird, or what?

Geoff, Aussies are funny people that's for sure. I have Aussie blood running through what's left of my body. My Grandad was from those parts originally, and his folks before that, and believe it or not, when I get on my verbal high horse the accent comes through Haitches and all, yet I have never made a visit to that wonderful land. Weird, or what?

In 30 odd years of photography I have never put a filter over my lenses for protection. But as I have L series I know I should do to complete the weather sealing. I will probably get one of these filters. Interesting stuff. Shows you get what you pay for. At least, the first video does...

The second video is nonsense though! The smaller HD Pro filter makes it harder to break with the hammer as the head of the hammer fills more of the filter and you're spreading the load. Not only is the glass better supported at the edges but the actual stress applied (not the pressure) is less.
He does also seem to miss the smaller filter at least twice and hit the metal, not the glass!

very nice, i may have to think about that, and yes cris i noticed that too, and of course smaller objects are harder to break, but the first vid looked good and there cheep enough at liek 60 quid,

Yes, I agree, Chris. I think that was mentioned in the Youtube comments as well. I don't think our filters will ever get that kind of punishment, so really, it isn't that important to go by this kind of test. Even so, if it gets hit by the odd pebble being kicked up from the beach by some over active kid, it is nice to know that it would protect the front end of our lens without shattering the glass. A shattered filter can do as much damage as not having any filter on the lens at all I would think.
