When you have no camera with you.......

you can guarantee there will be the most amazing photo to be had. I sit on the 8th floor of an office block. Only reason no camera with me today is that I'm here till 8 pm and didn't think it was worth bringing it with me. Low and behold...THE biggest and reddest sun just outside my window with amazing clouds forming patterns at the bottom! Ho hum. Life's like that!

Tell me about shots you have missed cos you didn't have the camera with you.

There has been quite a few moments. The most memorable being, a dear elderly lady without any hair on her head caught in a storm and chasing her wig as it tumbled into puddle after puddle in the high winds! That said, if I had caught the moments on film (as digital had yet to arrive) I would never have published them (even on todays Internet) without her expressed and written permission.

Frustraing isn't it, thankfully my Iphone has a reasonable camera on it so I can at least capture a reasonable shot as I generally have it with me. I do also have an old Canon A640 which I tend to carry with me where possible which takes a very nice photo.

I have however missed numerous shots when out walking the dog, usually when the dog does something crazy some amazing fungi in the woods which when I returned had been all kicked around and a double rainbow.

Oh and there was that unicorn with a Dodo egg balanced on his horn with a golden pheonix on its back I saw on the way back from the pub one night

I once saw a moon rainbow and tried to take a shot with a compact but it just came out black. Twice I've seen a triple rainbow but no camera. Used to work on the fifth floor and lost count of the times I've seen fantastic sunrises in February.

I've also missed shots when I've had the camera with me, like the time a child in Birmingham City centre threw a paddy on the pavement lying on his back. Camera was ready in my hand but I don't take picture of children.

Missed loads of sunsets and rainbows when I haven't had the camera with me. Also missed loads of birds of prey and other shots when I have had the camera with me but tucked away in the boot while I was driving.

A couple that I have missed when I have had the camera though.

Three swans came from nowhere and flew directly overhead. Swung the camera up to shoot. The lens cap was still on.

Another day, a mate and I were at a country park and I was trying to shoot a HDR of the lake and surrounding landscape. Had my 10-20 lens on. My mate said look at that. I looked up and there was a red kite soaring just overhead. As you can imagine, by the time I got my 70-300 on it was well gone.

I missed an amazing rainbow-like scene once. I was driving over to my girlfriend's, and saw a massive chunk of cloud that was completely rainbow coloured, with no rainbow in sight. It was amazing, and must have been some kind of trick of the light. Gutted that I didn't have my camera with me.

Ahhh I can relate to that, had my camera with me once and saw a Squirrel in a perfect pose eating a nut, took my lens cap off carefully composed the shot and pressed the shutter button which was closely followed by a series of beeps as I had left the self time on from my previous shot. Suffice as to say a split second before what seemed an agonising wait the squirrel legged it leaving me with a blurred shot of it's tail

Doing a recovery to near Hexham just after sunrise what I thought was a dog carrying something in its mouth running down the road towards me, got nearer it dropped two magpies then shot through the hedge. Camera in the bag on the floor of course, the birds had gone when I was going back so was the fox.

I can relate to that. When I was taking the shot of the lake at sunset (the one i recently received fantastic critique on) there were swans flying overhead too. As I had taken a while setting the camera up for the lake shot, I didn't dare move it! They look fantastic when soaring above too. I have the camera sitting a few inches from me at this very minute. Might go out again after work.
