This should cheer you all up then!

New chairman for thr BBC Chris Patten.
The Tory peer beat Sir Richard Lambert, the former head of the CBI, and Dame Patricia Hodgson, a long time BBC trustee to the post. He will earn £110,000.

Lord Patten lost his Commons seat, in Bath, in 1992 despite being credited, as party chairman, with delivering the surprise general election for John Major.

He was rewarded by the former prime minister who appointed him governor of Hong Kong. He was given the task of managing the handover of the colony to China in 1997.

Two years after the Hong Kong handover Lord Patten took over from Leon Brittan as European Commissioner for external relations, serving a full five year term. He was then made a life peer in 2005.

Hasn't he got enough pension then.

Interesting Dave, those were two of the epigrams I was going to reference in what was a long rant about the stupidity and mindless violence of the masses.

Yep, meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Face it guys, the UK needs to pay its way. Too many people have borrowed and spent too much for too long for it not to hurt when the bailiff calls. How the problem is dealt with is, of course, another matter. And that is really the only area for manoeuvre.

As stated earlier the UK is already a democracy and if you didn't vote in the general election (millions of you didn't) then look for the person to blame in the mirror.

As Winston Churchill said, democracy is the worst possible system of government, apart from all the other systems.

it won't happen in the UK, because no matter what you think of the government, the extra taxes, the losing of a few hundred thousand jobs or the invasion of CCTV & the loss of some civil liberties, we have it better than the vast majority of the rest of the world and the poverty we have in this country is insignificant when compared to that in the rest of the world.

So far there is little to show for these uprisings except a lot of bloodshed. Many of these countries are not even ready for democracy. Hence why the dictatorships return again and again. qv Egypt and many other African countries.

I agree with Denise. We are too polite and not very patriotic as a nation. I do agree with Gary as well though, compared to other countries we don't know how lucky we are. I also think its so important to vote, too many don't bother for whatever reason. I've always voted and my sisters have too but I think its because both our parents did and they stressed how important it was to us from an early age. I think the next election will see more young people voting, as a direct result of the student fees going up.

Nobody likes the cuts that are taking place, nobody like or wants to loss their job but we have to get this country back in its feet from the years of over spending and borrowing that the last Labour government did. They did it before and Maggie came in and sort things out, love her or hate her she did what she had to do and turned this country around, now it is the turn of Cammeron and Clegg to do the same, get us out of the s**t that Labour got us into, they almost broke this country financially, and lets not forget that even they said they would have to make cuts, so lets not be fooled by all their anti Con/Lib knocking over cuts, things wouldnt have been much better if (God forbid) Labour got in again.

For years now there have been too many freeloaders, people who have no intention of getting off their backsides to go to work who claim for anything and everything under the sun milking off the state while the rest of us go to work and pay our taxes and its about time those people who have had it too easy for too long learnt that they cant sponge off the state.

If you or I cant afford to to live we have to cut down on things, get rid of Sky TV, give up smoking and drinking, cut out the holidays etc, we cant keep going to the bank to borrow yet more money to keep us going, we cant afford to pay the money back if we do borrow more. That is where the country is only on a far bigger scale, and cuts sadly have to be made, some/most which will affect all of us whether we like it or not, but it is the only way to balance the books and get us on our feet again as a country.
Face facts people, we cant live beyond our means as we have been doing as a country, something had/has to give just the same as it does each week/month in our own household budgets, but to survive sacrifices have to be made, like Sky/holidays etc in personal budgets to libraries/swimming pools on a national level, but lets not forget who got us in this mess in the first place...................again.

I don't think you'll ever beat the system. It's a bit like in football where no player is bigger than the club.
You might oust a bad leader, but not much else will change. So you can't win.

The only uprising in the UK will probably be on the prices of oil and all the effected commodities ; that is, not that we should forget the sadness in loss of lives such turmoil brings or the joy of peacefull freedom.
