i am not too interested in models or makes just what lenses you would have and what it would be used for.

for instance 50mm prime for portraits etc?

14-24mm F2.8
24-70mm F2.8
105mm Macro
70-200mm F2.8

These are the lenses I use the most. The first for landscapes, second for landscapes and people, the third for close-ups of insects etc, and the forth as a general walkabout lens.

hagz, you say you are not too interested in models or makes but sensor size will have a bearing on lens choice. OldBoy has made four great suggestions but a look at his gallery tells you that he uses a full-frame Nikon D3.

If you take the 14-24mm lens it effectively becomes a 21-36 with Nikon APS-C, 22.4-38.4 with Canon APS-C and 28-48 with Olympus Four-Thirds. You can see that an Olympus DSLR owner might want something wider than a 14-24mm, such as the 9-18mm. So recommended lens choice might depend on the sensor size of your camera - not to mention budget (we can all dream).

The nice thing about OldBoy's suggested lenses is that the zooms would be OK on APS-C for someone planning to move to full-frame in future, although the 105mm macro might be a little long on APS-C. That's a matter of personal preference and need.

I've use both the 105mm macro and 70-200mm on my D200 before I had the D3.

APS-C camera.

70-200mm f2.8, my "standard" lens.
17-70mm OS (Siggy) On the odd occasion I go a little wide.
nifty 50, low light indoors, hardly ever.
300mm prime. +1.4x Birds and stuff.

10-20 close low level/landscapes
105 macros/portraits
300 wildlife
500 wildlife

But I could easily add another 4 to those!

In my bag to go about it / limited to 4 it would be:
Nikon 16-35 f4
My Tammjy 28-75
Siggy 70-200
Siggy 105 macro

Of course I`d really like to have Oldboys lenses but until I can earn them through my photography I`ll have to wait.
