I have the MB-D10 battery pack for the D300. It comes with a carrier for the EN-EL3 battery and a carrier for the AA cells. You can use either. There is no need to use the EN-EL4 batteries.
The MB-Q10 changes the handling of the D300 for the better and in common with most people who buy it I don't take it off.
The quality of the MB-D10 is as high as the camera and you soon forget it is an add on.
