The Guardians

From inside Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. What exquisite masonry work.
Taken late evening as the sun was dipping and the shadows were creeping in.

Nice image. The front statue is just a bit soft.

Love the ligihting and composition. The black and white really suits this kind of image too. The face on the first statue is soft but was that intentional? I find I am more drawn to the statues further away anyway.

Cracking shot and composition. Love the way the angle of the sunlight matches the statues.

Yeah, I know, It's a shame but I could hardly see in there and it looked sharp when I was taking it (need to get back to the opticians again .

I was quite suprised at the freedom I had to wander around and take photo's. It was Sunday afternoon, about 1hr before they locked the place up and it was fairly deserted (probably no more than 5-6 people in there).

I asked the security guard if it was OK to use the tripod and he agreed, but no flash.

Great capture Phil - yes, my eye is drawn to the soft statue too.

Is there no room for manouvre in selectively sharpening just that statue or is it too soft do you think. Or... maybe even softening the last or middle statue to throw emphasis on just one statue?

Drew,
I may give it a go at the weekend when I have more time, but feel it's too soft. I may go back and re-shoot as it's only 30 minutes away and it's a fascinating place - just can't guarantee the lighting next time

Marked as a lesson learnt, check, check again then double check

I think softning 1st & 3rd statue may not work with the lighting, as the composition and lighting pulls you towards the third statue anyway, and the arc of darkness starts upper right corner so your eye kind of leads in from there.

Just a quick bit of PP, hope you don't mind Phil, based on taking the eye away from the foremost statute by throwing the emphasis on the middle one, also brought out a bit more background detail.

Will delete from all my system in a couple of days.

Drew,
No problem, thanks for taking the time - I see what you mean now - misread your original note and assumed emphasis to be on third statue. This works better than original (although also needs straightening, which is strange because I thought I had done that in Lightroom before posting )

I'll have a go locally at the weekend to implement same changes.

It may be an optical illusion created by the 'curtains' to the left being more evident now - their stripe slants right to left.
