I'm Sorry, Mummy!

A shot taken last year of my 4 year old nephew. He was having a tearful moment after he discovered his beloved stuffed toy had been left at auntie's house.

it's well composed & exposed but the eyes are too heavily processed for the rest of the face.

Hi Kev, Yup the eyes were given a bit of a tweak in post processing, although obviously a bit too much lol.

I'm having a bit of difficulty in judging the brightness on my screen as the eyes didn't look that over baked in the large version. I just noticed that my monitor is at a slight angle away from me and moving up or down, even an inch, heavily alters the intensity of the whites. I've now squared it to the desk and lowered my seat height, so that I'm in the middle of the screen more. Hopefully now I'll get a "truer" brightness level.

I'll have to save my pennies and get a decent calibrator eventually, along with about £6k worth of other goodies that I'd dearly love. Roll on those damn lotto numbers lol!! I keep looking out my window for the big golden finger in the sky. The only one I'm likely to see is a middle finger though

Love it :-) I love his eye contact with the camera and how you have mananged to capture some emotions with this. People think you just photograph kids when they are happy and smiling yet that is not real life. This is a very strong portrait and once the eyes are sorted out it will be 10/10 for me :-)

Karen
PS If I tried to photography my neice or nephew when they were upset I a sure they would swing for me or yell their heads off lol

Hi Karen,

Glad you like the shot. Its been sat on my hardrive since September last year and I'd forgotten about it until I came across it again the other day. I've reduced the intensity of the eyes to look more natural (hopefully).

Jo is very gentle natured. If it had been Jack that was crying, I wouldn't dare put my camera near him as he has MAJOR hissy fits. Legs and arms flail and toys get launched lol

Here's the re-edited version and another image that was taken only moments before the tears began flowing.

All Smiles

The re-edited version is definitely an improvement for the eyes. With the second image the only thing I might want to do is pull his jumper around a bit, it feels too bulky for me. Don't know if liquify can help here, might be a 'at the time' job. However, these are both very natural and very strong portraits and I'm sure any parent would be happy with these images. ...and it just shows how important it is to keep look over our images!

He is a gorgeous looking boy, Aaron and really photogenic! His eyes are much better in the edited version. I think the black and white really suits him too because of his light blonde hair. You should make some more shots of him because potentially this would be a really strong set :-)
