I have both versions - the Nikkor and the E-series and, frankly, for anything less than the most critical work there is little to separate them optically. Much of the snobbishness about E-series was due to their introduction of plastic construction, but most lenses are plastic these days. The 100mm f2.8 E-series is a favourite of mine.

Great images can be obtained with a box Brownie if you are, as Jim clearly is, concerned with content rather than equipment

Bump

Edit: oops, meant to say most lens bodies are plastic these days.

Thanks for the info Bump! I wasn't 100% sure on what peoples' "issue" with the E-series lenses was and often wondered why some people I'd spoken, kind of dismissed them in favour of the AI and AI-S versions. BTW, I don't think I own a lens that isn't plastic bodied lol.

The reason why I asked Jim, is that I know the AI-S close focuses down to 20cm, and wondered how close he got to his subject in the 2nd photo.

If it was an E-series 28mm f2.8 the closest marked focus distance is 30cm rather than 20cm on the Nikkor AI-S. Rather than say any more about lenses here I could start a new thread about E-Series v Nikkor in 'Nikon Chat' if you think that might be of interest Aaron.

Definitely. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts and experience with them.
