EEEP! What's a good way to tell whether or not it's the genuine article instead?!

Easy. Buy a known brand card from a reputable dealer.

could have sworn I replied to this earlier.

eBay have a help page which has photos of all the differences between genuine & fake Sandisk cards, I'm sure if you google it you'll find how-to's on telling the differences.

And the fake cards don't have the same write-speed as the genuine cards, they are basically lower class cards rebadged as genuine, once you know the differences they are easy to spot.

@Chris: Unfortunately I've already bought my card - it's a Transcend however, and I've just transferred a 175Mb file over and it took 19 seconds - so 9.2 Mb/sec which isn't far off for a class 10. Phew!

Transcend are a decent make.

Transfer speeds are often restricted by your connectivity as much as anything else, but thats a decent speed (much faster than I ever get).

The thing that catches people out is they see cards for £30 or £40 and then see the "same" card for £2.99. It's never going to be the same thing. Doesn't mean it won't work, just not as well and is more likely to go wrong.
